In this webinar, Mark will share his experience of visiting the archive of Roberto Assagioli in Florence in 2012 and being led to a room adjacent to the main library piled high with folders labelled “Spiritual Astrology” in English. The emergent realisation that the founder of Psychosynthesis used astrology throughout his life, including creating hand-drawn charts of every client he worked with. It was a game-changer for his understanding of the important role astrology played in the formation of psychology.
From the 1980’s work of Maggie Hyde to the recent release of Liz Green’s two books on Jung and astrology, it has become clear just how much astrological symbolism has shaped the vision of Carl Jung. In the 1970’s, in Esalen, Stan Grof, alongside Richard Tarnas, led 100’s of people in a psychedelic vision quest during which time astrology became the primary guide to what was occurring for people.
In Mark’s view, these events are not accidental. Astrology didn’t just happen to be the hobby of three of the great figures who shaped transpersonal psychology in the 20th century. Astrology, with its ancient lineage and sacred symbolism established in multiple cultures over many millennia, provides a foundational solidity to these adventures in consciousness. These pioneering figures were then able to use astrology to help create a more holistic vision of Freud’s initial psychoanalytical breakthrough.
Join Mark for this inspirational journey into the intimacy of the relationship between astrology and a spiritually orientated depth psychology at the heart of the modern imagination. We all know that astrology is an inspirational guide to our lives. It turns out that many of the great figures of 20th-century psychology also knew this and utilised its power in secret to support their psychological vision. Maybe it’s time to start acknowledging that.
